there are plenty of free alternatives im using avast free right now (on my laptop im using AVG) both are for windows i dont know of a mac version
however if you are using the lockers try jDownloader it will work with free accounts (or even no account) and it will download and auto extract (if password is provided)

if you dont want to get rid of norton try going into install mode (that will disable it) until your download finishes if the is over 100mb rename the extension to .rar and then try and extract it
(sometimes pdfs i download get the js or aspx file extension i just have my pdf reader open those by default and it works just fine)
